Poetry with Jo Sarzotti and Desiree Alvarez hosted by Nina Shengold

Desirée Alvarez is a poet and painter whose second book, Raft of Flame, was selected by Hoa Nguyen to win the Lake Merritt Poetry Contest (Omnidawn, 2020). Her first book, Devil’s Paintbrush, won the 2015 May Sarton New Hampshire Poetry Award. Her poetry was recently anthologized in What Nature (MIT Press, 2018) and is featured in Other Musics: New Latina Poetry  (University of Oklahoma Press, 2019). She has published poems in Boston ReviewFencePoetry, and The Iowa Review. She received the Glenna Luschei Poetry Award from Prairie Schooner, and fellowships from New York Foundation for the Arts, Yaddo, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and Poets House. Mark Doty recently selected her as winner of the Whitman Bicentennial Poetry Contest. As a visual artist she was awarded the Willard L. Metcalf Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. She exhibits widely and teaches at CUNY and The Juilliard School.

Jo Sarzotti is the author of two books of poems, Mother Desert (Bakeless Prize winner, Graywolf Press 2012) and Waiting for Achilles (Black Lawrence Press, June 2019). Her work has appeared in Ploughshares, Southwest Review, Radar, Tupelo Quarterly, Denver Quarterly, Alaska Quarterly, North American Review, Perihelion, Borderlands, and in the anthologies The Traveler’s Vade Mecum(Red Hen Press 2016) and Poem-a-Day: 365 Poems for Every Occasion (Abrams 2015).
